Eckford holding some plaques from the old Wall of Fame, he said previous members would retain their status | Mik Horvath/MBC
For the first time in over 20 years, Renfrew Recreation will be organizing the Renfrew athletes Wall of Fame.
Renfrew’s Recreation Operations Supervisor, Shawn Eckford, said the original wall was taken down during the Ma-Te-Way revitalization, but now the rec department is looking to once again honour those involved with local sports and recreation programs; coaches and athletes alike.
Eckford said the department has been getting a number of calls from locals asking “where is the Wall of Fame?”
However, since it’s been over 20 years since the last commemoration, Renfrew Recreation has some work to do.
Yesterday (Feb. 18) the town put out a notice on social media that they are looking for community members to join a working group tasked with assisting in organizing the new Wall of Fame.
Eckford said there is still lots of planning ahead, and doesn’t expect the wall to be on display until at least 2027.
As for the roster Eckford said it would be beneficial to work with community members with a background in local sports in recreation, however with a new Wall of Fame coming the department is also open to new avenues.
The deadline to apply for the working group is Feb. 27, at noon and anyone interested can contact Eckford directly at seckford@renfrew.ca
