The County of Renfrew will be making changes to its winter maintenance plan to keep local roads safe this winter.
In light of the ongoing road salt shortage across the province, the county will stretch their remaining supply for the rest of the season by using a sand-salt mix that will help maintain traction on icy roads while conserving their resources for where they are needed the most.
They note that commuters might notice that roads could appear more snow-packed than usual, especially in colder weather. People travelling should give themselves extra travel time, drive according to the present conditions, and both reduce speeds and increase following distances during their trip.
County plows are responsible for caring for 816 kilometres of roadways, plus 251 bridges and culverts that connect communities across the Ottawa Valley.
