Communities across the Ottawa Valley can expect to spend part of the winter under slippery conditions as a province-wide road salt shortage impacts local roads.
Town staff in Renfrew say their supply of road salt is now limited despite their efforts to stockpile road salt earlier this winter, forcing road crews to prioritize plowing and treating the town’s main roadways as close to bare pavement as possible until further notice.
They add that secondary roads and backstreets could retain layers of compacted snow during the shortage, leading to longer-lasting slippery conditions and the increased likelihood of icy patches, especially in colder temperatures.
Affected residents are being asked to avoid pushing snow onto their roads, avoid on-street parking as much as possible, and keep garbage and recycling bins off roadways and snowbanks on collection days.
