Two local senior citizens have recently been targeted by the emergency/grandparent scam and in one case, it worked.
Upper Ottawa Valley OPP say a senior in Pembroke sent $800 to someone claiming to be their grandchild.
The common fraud has people getting phone calls from someone claiming to be their grandchild who is in some kind of legal trouble and needs money right away.
OPP Constable Shawn Peever says in another case, the scam wasn’t successful.
Constable Peever says the scams are getting harder to spot with the rise of AI and things like voice cloning.
He says it’s important that everyone is skeptical of these types of requests for money and either call the person directly on the phone number you already have for them or call other family members to check out the story.
