Starting next year on Jan. 1, municipal recycling programs are undergoing some pretty big changes under the hood.
However these municipalities, including Renfrew, have said residents won’t be experiencing much change regarding their recycling routine.
In fact the changes actually introduce a wider spectrum of recyclable materials, which can be found online.
The new operation will be managed by Circular Materials Ontario (CMO) and local pickup will be handled by Miller Waste.
These changes are being made province-wide and now material producers will be the ones responsible for paying for recycling programs and not the municipalities.
However, there still comes a cost.
In the footnote of the town’s announcement of the program they mention the new model does not include non-residential units.
These include businesses (such as the downtown core), offices and schools.
Due to this exclusion the town is working on an additional agreement with Miller Waste to pick up recycling for small businesses.
The service will cost the town $106,000 as discussed in a previous council meeting.
At that meeting Renfrew’s Manager of Environmental Services, Amanda Springer, said providing pickup is important in preventing landfill and litter buildup in Renfrew.
