Renfrew’s Kale Osipenko is on the move following another solid showing against some of Jr. A hockey’s best.
The Renfrew Wolves have announced that the 17-year-old goaltender has been called up to the OHL’s Sarnia Sting with the expectation that he will remain with them through the New Year.
General Manager Jarrett DeFazio says the move is a perfect fit for a young prospect looking to impress.
Osipenko has ranked among the Central Canada Hockey League’s best goaltenders in his first year in the league, posting a 10-4-1 record and a 2.39 goals against average in 16 games. However, DeFazio says it’s been hard for scouts to overlook Kale’s notable performance for Canada East at the World Jr. A Challenge tournament.
The move does leave the club with some uncertainty in net, but DeFazio says the club will continue to rely on recent acquisition Reece Herman and a battery of players from their Jr. B affiliate to fill the gap.
The Wolves could swing a trade for another goaltender but are more likely to wait until the Sting make a decision on whether they keep Osipenko or return him to Renfrew sometime in mid-January.
