Supporters of Renfrew’s public library are being called on to make their presence known on Tuesday.
Renfrew Public Library Board Chair Hayley Heaslip says recent budget talks among town council have turned their request for a $50,000 increase in 2026 into a $124,000 cut, which she describes as nearly all of their general operating costs for last year, directly affecting a community lifeline relied on by residents every day.
Heaslip calls the library a safe, welcoming space for the community that provides more than just books but also programming for all ages, access to technology and the internet, warm spaces for those in need, and opportunities to learn and connect that residents might not be able to afford otherwise, all at a serious cost savings for the public, according to a recent impact survey.
She’s now urging residents looking to speak against the proposed budget cuts to make their faces and voices known to the council when their next budget discussion rolls around, noting that it could make the difference in protecting what they’re able to offer the community.
Council will gather at their chambers inside town hall on Tuesday, December 16th, with a delegation led by Heaslip at the top of their agenda starting around 5:30 pm.
