As the community enjoyed a festive weekend, a small gathering of Renfrew residents took some time out to help in the battle against intimate partner violence.
The group, which included acting Mayor Peter Emon and friends from the Bernadette McCann House, met outside town hall on Friday, December 5th, for a candlelight vigil ahead of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
One local for Bernadette McCann House explains that the day not only marks the sobering anniversary of the 14 women killed in the École Polytechnique massacre of 1989 but also those who have continued to struggle under abuse.
She adds that it is encouraging to see Renfrew continue to embrace their own local vigil, which began back in 2023, as more people come to understand that something needs to be done to solve what continues to be a notable issue across Renfrew County and Ontario.
We asked her how someone can make a difference in the battle against intimate partner violence. She says the simplest way to do so is by being aware and vocal about what you see and hear.
Those living under the threat of an abusive relationship are encouraged to reach out to the Bernadette McCann House, which offers a 16-bed emergency shelter for women and children and a 24/7 support and crisis phone line at 613-732-3131 and toll-free at 1-800-267-4930.
