The region’s municipal leaders are pleased to see some of their concerns reflected in the federal budget.
The Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus, which represents 103 municipalities including the County of Renfrew, says the 2025 federal budget “underscores the importance of new housing-enabling infrastructure, diversified trade relationships, and a new defence industrial strategy,” all of which they support.
However, EOWC Chair Bonnie Clark notes that “Building Canada Strong” will require a “collaborative approach that engages all levels of government” to ensure long-term infrastructure planning and sustained investment that aligns with the federal goal of building 500,000 homes per year without putting the burden on residents, especially in smaller municipalities.
Affordable housing continues to be a significant issue for communities across the Ottawa Valley, as the County of Renfrew’s 2024 MESA plan for compassionate care outlines an ongoing 10-year homelessness and housing initiative.
Meanwhile, Clark says that the caucus remains ready to work and grow as they “partner with the federal government to contribute together toward Canada’s growth and prosperity.”
