Changes are underway in Chalk River as the community’s nuclear labs undergo a little renovation.
Canadian Nuclear Laboratories says they have safely demolished two exterior rooms at their local facility after they were decommissioned earlier this year.
The labs say that the project, which comes after months of planning, which included scoping, hazard reduction, system isolation, and waste removal, was centred around tearing down an old 380-square-foot air-exchange laboratory once used for non-radiological catalyst work.
Construction crews will continue to be on site as CNL plans to repurpose the remaining concrete pad as a laydown area for equipment and tooling needed during the future demolition of the larger building.
