Renfrew's clock tower | Mik Horvath/MBC
It’s that time of year again for the Valley to adjust its clocks, daylight savings time is coming to an end and everybody’s weekend gets extended – by an hour.
The biannual tradition started at the height of WW2 in Ontario and Quebec in a bid to save on energy but it seemed to stick around over the years despite split opinions.
It’s also connected to potential health issues; Health Council Canada reports that shifting schedules by an hour triggers circadian rhythm disruption which can potentially cause disorientation that lasts days or in some cases weeks.
Disrupting this rhythm can also lead to stress and anxiety, as well as changing eating patterns.
The report suggests to slowly adjust your sleep schedule by increments of 15 minutes to adapt to the changes smoothly.
Don’t be afraid to take a quick power nap either, which can give a quick boost of energy.
The clocks change Saturday night.
