On Freaky Friday slashers, ghouls, ghosts, goblins and witches flood the street | Mik Horvath/MBC
Last Friday the ghouls and goblins of Raglan St. S arose to fill the night with screams and scares.
It was Freaky Friday, an annual event the Downtown Renfrew Business Improvement Area (DRBIA) orchestrates with local business owners to host some downtown Halloween fun before the big night on Oct. 31.
For mother Sabrina Guyea it was an opportunity to spend some quality time with her kids.
Kids of all ages flooded the downtown’s sidewalks eager to claim some sweet loot from business owners handing out candy, not unlike trick-or-treating in other Renfrew neighbourhoods.
However, some of the business owners turned to a new venture: scares.
Mel Blimkie, owner of Sense of Country in the downtown, adorns the alleyway next to his store with creepy crawlies, monsters and other terrors of the night.
Blimkie said the lineup for this attraction extended out towards Railway Ave., reflecting just how busy it was that night.
This year the DRBIA got permission to block-off and utilize the portion of Railway Ave. from Raglan to Plaunt for local organizations to pitch up display booths and tents, handing out candy to the kids.
Alex Newcombe, owner of pRAWper Pet Treats, said he has never seen Renfrew so busy.
pRAWper Pet Treats had a tent on Railway Ave., and Newcombe simply loves to get involved with the community.

Blimkie said the night was such a resounding success that he strongly believes next year’s Freaky Friday will be even freakier.
Stay tuned with the DRBIA and speak with local business owners to see what big event is coming to Renfrew’s downtown next.
