Artificial Intelligence (AI) has taken the world by storm and has been applied to nearly every field imaginable.
An emerging variant of this technology are the generative AI’s, programs that aggregate data and compile it into “new” content.
Generative AI, for example, is able to scan images off the internet and morph them into a seemingly original creation.
However, since these systems reuse existing data to develop their algorithms and techniques there has been much discussion regarding generative AI and how it can be ethically applied to day-to-day operations.
Superintendent of education for the Renfrew County District School Board, Scott Nichol, said they’ve identified the technology and are striving for students to continue to produce mostly human work.
Back in January of this year the RCDSB assembled an artificial intelligence committee based on discussions with other school boards in the Valley and in the Capital Region.
The committee’s main objective is figuring out how to integrate AI safely within the classroom and a part of that is ensuring both the educators and students fully understand this technology’s implications.
Nichol says that the unrestricted use of generative AI systems has educators concerned with students’ critical and creative thinking.
