The Bonnechere Algonquin First Nation (BAFN) is an established Algonquin community with their headquarters right in Renfrew.
BAFN Chief, Richard Zohr, said the BAFN Community Cultural Centre, which is directly attached to the myFM Centre, is unique because they were built from the ground-up to educate people on Indigenous culture.
Zohr said the best way to reconcile is to learn about the rich history of Indigenous people and speak with members of the community to learn about their culture firsthand.
National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is held on September 30 every year starting in 2021 as a day to recognize those affected by the atrocities of residential schools.
Canada is now in a time of reflection and Zohr said it’s important for Canadians to not only speak with members of the Indigenous community but to also learn and explore the history themselves.
On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation BAFN is hosting an event at the Community Cultural Centre for people to learn about Indigenous culture which is the perfect place to start learning.
He said that having the Cultural Community Centre as a resource is a key aspect of the education process and wants as many people in the community as possible to come down and check it out.
Thanks to its proximity to the National Capital Region, Chief Zohr is putting Renfrew on the map as an international hub for education on Indigenous culture.
As Chief, Zohr always enjoys projects that bring the community together and he said it strengthens its bond.
