Members of the Renfrew Millionaires softball club got a belated but much-deserved heroes’ welcome ahead of the weekend.
The team met with Mayor Tom Sidney along Low Square on Friday evening to receive a special commendation for their bronze medal performance at the recent Special Olympics Ontario Summer Games in Brantford, an achievement the mayor calls a source of pride for the community.
The Millionaires braved very hot conditions over the July 10th weekend, showing off the dedication of the athletes and their supporters by competing against teams from across the province to reach the podium.
One notable absence during the presentation was well-respected community booster and longtime coach Frank Belanger, who is set to step back from the team following the Summer Games.
Belanger and the Millionaires are expected to be in attendance at the town council meeting on Tuesday, August 26th, where Mayor Sidney and his fellow councillors will officially celebrate their efforts in a way that will stay on record through the town’s YouTube channel.
