Jason Hickman beside his 1st place winning piece at the Greater Madawaska Landscape Artist of the Year competition
The township’s Landscape Artist of the Year competition enjoyed a fabulous debut on July 20th, inspiring 22 amateur painters from the Ottawa Valley to create new works of art with a stunning view of the nearby Calabogie Mountain.
This year’s winner in the adult category and the overall winner was Jason Hickman of Ottawa, who has been painting on-and-off for the past 30 years. He calls it a weird but fun experience as he has never done tried landscape painting while outside before.
Judges were wowed by his sustainability friendly use of recycled polyfoam as his canvas, something that allowed him flex his creativity. “I can carve, melt, spray, and build textures—then paint it with acrylic.”
Greater Madawaska sends their thanks to the dedicated judges and phenomenal organizers who made everything run smoothly and beautifully.
- 2nd Place (Adult Division): Peter Winfield, whose oil painting captured a breathtaking view toward Calabogie Mountain, complete with a lake island and a majestic backdrop.
- 3rd Place (Adult Division): Morgana Dillingham, who enchanted us with her fibre arts landscape—painting with yarn to weave a picturesque scene full of texture and imagination.
- Awards were also presented in High School, Primary, and Children’s categories, showcasing the amazing talent across all ages.
