The Ontario Provincial Police is warning the public to stay alert for seasonal paving and home repair scams making the rounds across the province.
Fraudsters often approach homeowners uninvited, offering driveway paving, roof repairs, or other quick-fix jobs. They typically claim it’s a “one-day-only deal” and may appear legitimate with flyers, websites, or work trucks—but the OPP says these are often unmarked vehicles, and scammers use fake names or false identification.
Victims are frequently asked to pay in cash upfront, only to be left with shoddy work—or nothing at all.
“These scams usually occur between April and October and often go unreported,” the OPP said. “If someone shows up at your door offering services you didn’t ask for, don’t feel pressured. Take your time, talk to someone you trust, and report anything suspicious.”
The OPP advises homeowners to stay vigilant by following a few key tips:
-
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
-
Legitimate contractors are usually busy and don’t need to solicit door-to-door.
-
Always research the company and carefully read any contracts.
-
When in doubt, contact police.
Anyone who believes they’ve been targeted or defrauded is encouraged to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or online at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
