Renfrew’s fire department is asking residents and guests who smoke to keep their butts in check to keep the community safe.
Firefighters have been busy dealing with a number of incidents over the past month, usually set off by cigarette butts being tossed into the downtown core’s flower beds.
Those beds often contain flammable material like cedar mulch and bark, and they say discarding cigarettes into them is not only careless and damaging but also dangerous.
They ask smokers to always put their cigarettes out fully before disposal, using water or sand to extinguish them properly, and to never flick butts on the ground, into garbage cans and planters, or out of vehicles.
