The 9th Annual Memorial Butterfly Release will take flight at Water Tower Park in Barry’s Bay on Sunday, July 27, 2025. Hosted by Madawaska Valley Hospice Palliative Care and the St. Francis Valley Healthcare Foundation, the event gives families a special way to remember loved ones by releasing painted lady butterflies.
The ceremony runs from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. behind the Opeongo Seniors Centre and includes live music and a message from Life Cycle Celebrant Julie Keon. Those unable to attend can watch a live stream on the SFVHF Facebook page. Butterflies for home release may be picked up between 1:00 and 1:30 p.m.
Each butterfly costs $35 or three for $100. Proceeds help support hospice palliative care in the community. Pre-registration is required by Friday, July 11, due to the time needed to raise the butterflies. To register, visit sfvhfoundation.com or call 613-756-3045 ext. 217.
The event holds deep meaning for many, including the O’Reilly family, who shared their gratitude for the care their mother, Veronica O’Reilly, received at the hospice. Her son Neil called the time they spent together a “blessing and gift” that the family will always cherish.
Guests transporting butterflies for home release are encouraged to bring an ice pack and insulated container.
This touching tradition celebrates love, loss, and hope while bringing the community together in support of local hospice services.
