World Environment Week (June 1st to 7th) has come and gone, but the Kitchissippi Ottawa Valley Chapter of the Council of Canadians says there’s still some important local initiatives you can join- or undertake on your own.
Although Renfrew County has undertaken to start up a Climate Action Committee, the initiative could still use a little nudge.
On the KOC website, under ”Climate Postcard Campaign,” why not pick one and send it along to the good folks at the Upper Tier?
Chapter spokesperson Ann Pohl has begun efforts to encourage formation of a Youth Climate Theatre, and welcomes emails if if youth arts/social action engagement speaks to you.
Youth Activism is a powerful force, and despite efforts by the Ford Government to get a potential class-action lawsuit going on the basis of climate negligence and abuse, Queen’s Park will soon have to defend itself against it in court, as the “Mathur” case, begun in 2019, has been given approval to go ahead.
At the other end of the demographic spectrum, Seniors For Climate (SFC) is planning cross-Canada climate action for September 19th-21st, 2025- plans for which were finalized June 10th.
Finally, Stand in Solidarity with Kebaowek Algonquin First Nations to Protect the Ottawa Valley’s Water. Not much is being said about a KFN court victory forcing Canadian Nuclear Laboratories back to the consultation table; rather tha do that, CNL has chosen to appeal the decision.
Take a deep breath (unless the air is smoky), and find out more on these topics by visiting the Kitchissippi-Ottawa Valley COC chapter website.
