Canadians across most provinces and territories will receive a test emergency alert on their phones, TVs, and radios today (Wednesday, May 7), as part of a nationwide test of the Alert Ready system.
In Ontario, the alert will be sent at 12:55 p.m., sounding the familiar Canadian Alert Attention Signal, followed by a message that it’s only a test.
The goal of the test is to raise awareness, improve emergency preparedness, and ensure the alerting system works properly. These tests also allow emergency officials to practice sending alerts quickly and effectively.
Not everyone may receive the alert on their mobile device due to reasons like device compatibility, network connection, or settings.
Canadians cannot opt out of emergency alerts.
The test coincides with Emergency Preparedness Week, running May 4 to 10, which encourages Canadians to “Be Ready for Anything” by creating an emergency plan and preparing a safety kit.
