Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has launched an investigation after a police incident in Pembroke on Tuesday, April 29.
Shortly before 1:00 p.m., officers from the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP responded to a report of a man behaving strangely on Mary Street. According to police, the man was walking into the road and putting himself and others at risk.
Officers took the man into custody and brought him to the hospital. Later that day, the OPP was informed the man had suffered a non-life-threatening injury during the incident.
Because of the injury, the SIU has invoked its mandate, which means it will now take over the investigation. The Ontario Provincial Police cannot share more details while the SIU review is underway.
It’s the second time in as many months that SIU has been called in to look into police response in the Ottawa Valley after an anti-riot weapon was used to subdue a suspect in an April 10th domestic disturbance in Renfrew.
