A 23-year-old commercial motor vehicle (CMV) driver is facing several charges following a traffic stop on Highway 41 in North-Algona Wilberforce (NAW) Township on February 21. The driver, from Caledon, Ontario, was pulled over after a driving complaint involving a CMV tractor-trailer unit was reported to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).
Upon stopping the vehicle, OPP officers, with the help of a Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) Enforcement Officer, conducted an inspection of the CMV. The inspection revealed significant defects, including issues with the braking system. As a result, the vehicle’s licence plates were seized.
The driver has been charged with several Highway Traffic Act (HTA) offences, including careless driving, failing to accurately complete a daily inspection report, and operating a CMV with major defects—two counts. Additionally, the CMV, which was carrying flammable goods, was placed out of service and towed from the scene.
This incident highlights the importance of regular vehicle inspections and adherence to safety regulations, especially when transporting hazardous materials.
