The OPP is reminding snowmobile owners that it is illegal to modify or change the exhaust system of a snowmobile when using it on public trails.
This reminder follows recent complaints from local residents about the loud noise caused by modified snowmobiles on area trails. Modified exhaust systems, often called “cans” or “pipes,” can greatly increase the noise level of snowmobiles, disturbing nearby homes and communities. These aftermarket exhaust parts fail to adequately suppress sound, causing noise to carry across open areas like lakes and fields.
Some snowmobile owners replace the stock exhaust with aftermarket parts that claim to boost performance. However, whether for improved performance or to draw attention, these modifications violate the Motorized Snow Vehicles Act (MSVA), which regulates snowmobile noise levels.
Snowmobilers who alter their exhaust system can face a fine of $110 and may be banned from using the trail system. The UOV OPP and OPP’s East Region Snow Vehicle, All Terrain Vehicle, and Vessel Enforcement/Education (SAVE) Team will continue to patrol snowmobile trails throughout the season to ensure compliance with the MSVA and promote safety.
