The Honourable Justice Murray Sinclair, father of Truth and Reconciliation, has died.
A member of the Peguis First Nation, Sinclair became the first Indigenous judge in Manitoba, and in 2009, was appointed to lead the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada as chief commissioner.
His efforts over six years would produce the 94 Calls to Action report, a guide to repairing the damaged relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada and laying the groundwork for reconciliation.
From 2016 to 2021, Murray Sinclair was appointed as a Senator. Sinclair also received the Companion of the Order of Canada in 2022 and the Order of Manitoba in 2024.
Murray Sinclair died on Monday, Nov. 4, at age 73.
A number of municipalities are flying the Canada flag at half-mast in his honour.
