The Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) Detachment is alerting all motorists about the Civic Day long weekend traffic safety campaign, running from August 2 to August 5, 2024.
This year’s campaign focuses on Ontario’s Move Over law, which protects police, emergency services, and tow truck personnel working roadside. Officers will also be targeting inattentive, aggressive, and impaired drivers.
“Upper Ottawa Valley OPP officers remain committed to traffic safety,” says Inspector Steph Neufeld, UOV Detachment Commander. “Traffic initiatives like this highlight the ongoing need to address high-risk behaviors that endanger officers, drivers, passengers, and other road users.”
Ontario’s Move Over law, in effect since 2003, requires motorists to slow down and move over when approaching emergency vehicles parked or stopped on the roadside. Non-compliance carries fines ranging from $490 to $2,000 and three demerit points, with subsequent offenses resulting in fines up to $4,000, possible jail time, and license suspension for up to two years.
“We want everyone to reach their destinations safely,” adds Neufeld. “Compliance with the Move Over law and responsible driving are crucial for the safety of all highway users.”
Motorists are encouraged to stay vigilant and adhere to traffic laws to ensure a safe long weekend for everyone.
