The play structure at Renfrew's Horton Height Park which will be torn down on July 22nd
Last-ditch efforts to save a pair of Renfrew’s playground structures have not worked out.
Recreation Operations Specialist Shawn Eckford tells us about what CPRA Canadian Certified Playground Inspectors found that caused one aging structure at Horton Heights Park and another at Knight of Columbus Park to be deemed unsafe during a May visit.
Eckford says they did try to remove as many unsafe components as they could so the two structures could last through the summer, but the inspectors have still ordered their teardown on July 22nd and 23rd.
While the decision is unfortunate, Eckford stresses that only the two play structures identified will be removed. All other equipment at both Horton Heights Park and Knights of Columbus Park will remain untouched.
He is also encouraging regular visitors to explore what the town has to offer should either park no longer fit their needs.
He also says the town has plenty of seasonal programming designed to keep children and youth engaged, including through the Renfrew County Youth Wellness Hub inside the myFM Centre.
There are no immediate plans to replace the play structures, but Eckford does note that both parks will likely be given higher priority during upcoming budget and planning discussions.
