Isn’t It Ironic? Scammers are now involving the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC): in their deceptive pitches!
Here’s how it works: You get an email with the CAFC logo on its masthead, requesting your co-operation in an on-going investigation. Problem is, the return contact information has been altered to direct you to a bogus contact. You think you’re helping, while the fraudsters help themselves.
This new twist can play out in the bogus “Bank Investigator” scam, the “Tech Support” fraud, and the “Recovery Pitch”- which offers you the hope of getting back what’s already been taken.
Anyone who suspects they have been the victim of the above, or any fraud is urged to contact their local police, the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or ontariocrimestoppers.ca.
You can also report to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s online reporting system or by phone at 1-888-495-8501.
