St. Joes Valedictorian Andrew Coyne
The graduating class of St. Joseph’s Catholic High School will make one more appearance at the school on Thursday evening.
90 students, led by valedictorian Andrew Coyne, will be celebrated with a commencement ceremony, featuring a unique tradition where each graduate will have the opportunity to request a rose for a special individual who has had a positive impact on their educational journey and who they would credit with being a huge supporter and contributor to their success.
In a statement, Coyne reflects on the chance to “celebrate the growth and development which has shaped us into who we are as we gaze towards the future lying ahead,” adding that “the faculty and administration at St. Joes cultivated a space where everyone is accepted, a space where your curiosity and enthusiasm are cherished.”
Another important part of Thursday night will be the 113 bursaries and awards set to be given out to the graduating class, thanks to what the Coyne is calling the “generosity of the larger community to support the future of our society.”
Vice-Principal Julie Shreenan tells myFM that this graduating class has already endured more than most by finishing grade 9 in the midst of a worldwide pandemic. She also commends her students for “weathering that storm” and demonstrating perseverance at a young age.
Shreenan goes on to remind students to stay true to their faith. “Over your educational journey here at St. Joseph’s High School, we believe we have given you many gifts. We’ve given you the gift of knowledge through your participation in classes; we’ve given you the gift of athletics for those interested in sport; and the gift of the arts for those musically or dramatically inclined.
“Our programs and offerings are purposefully planned to offer you as many gifts and opportunities as we can. But we truly believe the greatest gift that we have offered to you is the gift of faith and to have a relationship with Jesus.”
