This is AccessAbility Week, and here are some tips to keep in mind when assisting persons with physical disabilities.
(Bear in mind that physical disabilities cover a wide range of movement and/or muscular coordination, to weakness, tremors and paralysis).
Before you offer help, ask if they require it.
Wheelchairs and other mobility devices are part of an individual’s personal space- don’t touch, move or lean on them.
Businesses should keep access ramps free of clutter and provide an unobstructed pathway through your premises. Provide accessible seating with arm rests for those who may not be able to stand for prolonged periods. Meet your guest or customer at their eye-level when engaged in conversation.
Let’s celebrate the achievements of those who encounter barriers every day!
