Today marks the start of an important campaign by police on both sides of the Ottawa River.
OPP detachments in Renfrew County and their Quebec counterparts will be highly visible on local roads as part of the annual Canada Road Safety Week.
Between May 14th and May 20th, officers will be paying particular attention to the big four causes of collisions causing personal injury: impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving, and not wearing a seat belt.
Drivers will need to be vigilant about their own behaviour, even if they don’t see cruisers on the road with them. The OPP East Region Headquarters says that planes from the OPP Aviation Services will also be flying in some areas to help officers on the ground, although they aren’t saying if their airborne presence will be focusing on major roads like the 400-series highways or secondary roads.
Killaloe OPP Interim Detachment Commander Mary Ann MacNeil says that traffic safety remains a high priority not only during Canada Road Safety Week but all year long.
Meanwhile, Upper Ottawa Valley OPP Detachment Operations Manager Sgt. Sarah Darraugh says that all motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians are asked to do their part in helping keep our roadways safe.
