As Emergency Preparedness Week continues, the Township of Greater Madawaska is highlighting the importance of education and preparation surrounding wildfires.
It’s a topic likely to hit close to home in the municipality. In June 2023, a wildfire fire broke out June 4 on an island on Centennial Lake. The fire then spread to land, at one point growing to 50 hectares in size.
“After evacuations, high levels of fear, and the incredible dedication and bravery of Fire Department responders, we are sure the community as a whole would like to avoid ever experiencing this again,” reads a Greater Madawaska Township social media post. “Please take some time to educate yourself as to how wildfires can be prevented, how to ensure your home and family are prepared in case one occurs, and how to navigate the situation if it does (knock on wood!).
The township offers several tips, including:
- Always use extreme caution during any burning, and ensure that all guidelines and requirements are followed, as stipulated on the fire department web page.
- Never throw lit cigarettes on the ground, or out of car windows.
- Ensure sufficient water is on hand at all times, capable of extinguishing a fire quickly should conditions change.
- Ensure you have an emergency kit on hand.
The Government of Canada website also has a number of tips and guidelines as to how to prevent and prepare.
