Did you know that a professional auto thief can steal your vehicle in just 30 seconds – without the key?
Renfrew’s police board and the Renfrew Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police recently rolled out the HEAT (Helping Eliminate Auto Theft) initiative.
Along with a bait vehicle and traffic cameras that can track licence plates, education is a major component of HEAT. The police, with the co-operation of more than 30 community partners, will be providing information and helpful tips to the public.
You can protect your vehicle from theft with a few simple precautions:
- Report any suspicious activity in your neighbourhood, including individuals trespassing on your property (especially during non-daylight periods), to police.
- Always roll up your vehicle’s windows, lock the doors and pocket the keys.
- If you have a garage, use it and lock the door as well as your vehicle.
- Secure your vehicle’s diagnostic port lock (OBD) protector, which blocks access to the vehicle’s diagnostic port.
- Use a steering wheel locking device and/or wheel club immobilizer to deter theft.
- Invest in an aftermarket global positioning system (GPS) tracker as it may assist in the recovery of the stolen vehicle.
- Secure your key fob in a protective case within your residence.
- Ensure your key fob is not visible or easily accessible to others in public places.
- Consider purchasing a quality video surveillance system and ensure the cameras are clearly visible outside your residence.
- Upgrade the exterior lighting where you park your vehicle.
- Invest in anti-theft devices, including ignition or fuel immobilizing switches and after-market vehicle alarm systems.
