Now that Renfrew has heard the second half of the Ma-te-Way Expansion’s third-party review, what’s next?
Councillors heard from WSCS Consulting on their findings and recommendations following months of research into the issues behind the massively delayed and overbudget project.
When asked about a possible forensic audit, consultant Tammy Carruthers said it would require expanding the review’s scope.
Carruthers took council through what that might look like.
Both town staff and council have already made indications of their plans now that the months-long investigation has played out.
Chief Administrative Officer Rob Tremblay would note that it is his and the clerk’s office’s job to rebuild public trust in the wake of the findings, adding that an action plan to implement the report’s recommendations at all levels of the municipality is in progress.
Meanwhile, Town Council would make a pair of motions to be heard when they reconvene for their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, March 26th.
The first would call for Mayor Tom Sidney to resign “as a way for the town to move forward and for accountability for the lack of oversight and leadership,” pointing to his role as the Parks and Recreation committee chair for a significant amount of the project before being elected as Mayor in 2022, while the second motion would also remove Sidney from all remaining committees, working groups, and external boards, effective immediately.
