Experts say Canada’s warmest winter on record should serve as a wake-up call to cut emissions of heat-trapping greenhouse gas emissions. The warmest winter on record is raising concerns about everything from the upcoming wildfire season to erosion.
Environment Canada’s David Phillips says he calls this winter — quote — “the lost season.” Phillips says the record-breaking temperatures upended Canada’s winter way of life. Winter festivals were cancelled, ski resorts closed, and remote First Nations in Ontario and Manitoba that depend on ice roads issued states of emergency due to poor conditions.
That’s because the three-month period from December to February was the warmest ever seen in national records dating back 77 years.
Concordia University climate scientist Damon Matthews says climate change was the main driver of the warm temperatures and Canada needs to stop arguing about whether climate change is an issue.
