Renfrew’s lone by-law officer will likely be wearing a body camera the next time you see them on duty.
The Town’s Fire, Emergency, and Protective Services Committee met with the Director Mike Guest on Tuesday to discuss a policy centered around the use of body cams for Renfrew’s in-house by-law services.
Guest explains that by-law’s role has become increasingly crucial in maintaining public safety and community standards.
The policy spells out when and where Renfrew’s in-house by-law officer records while on duty, advising residents of the filming, and the secure retention and deletion of recordings among other key points.
Another detail that the committee was curious about was where the money came for the equipment, which was purchased last year.
Chief Administrative Officer Rob Tremblay explains it was part of the move away from third-party service Municipal Law Enforcement Service.
Councilor Clint McWhirter was on board, pointing out that cameras have become more common place with other notably public facing jobs such a taxis and policing.
He also noted that it lines the in-house by-law service with Renfrew’s previous model through MLES, who also wore body cameras on the job.
Town Council will decide on the fate of the policy at an upcoming meeting.
