The OPP is currently investigating an alarming online scam involving fraudsters impersonating RCMP investigators. In a recent incident, a Hawkesbury resident received a pop-up message claiming a computer virus and urging contact with “Apple” at a provided number. Falling victim to the ruse, the individual downloaded remote entry software, granting the fraudster control.
The deception took a sinister turn when the fraudster, posing as a tech support employee, alleged the victim’s IP address was tied to an international child pornography and money laundering investigation. Swiftly “transferred” to a fake RCMP Cyber Crimes Investigator, the vigilant victim’s probing questions exposed the fraud.
Promptly reporting the incident to the OPP, the victim received assistance in flagging financial accounts to mitigate potential losses. This case sheds light on the increasing threat of online scams, emphasizing the importance of cybersecurity awareness. In 2023, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre reported $22.2 million in losses from service frauds, underscoring the urgency of collective vigilance against evolving cyber threats. Stay informed, question suspicious communications, and report potential scams to protect against online fraud.
