A last-minute dagger from Czechia has spelled the end of Team Canada’s quest at the World Junior Hockey Championship.
Canada, led by head coach and Renfrew-native Alan Letang, leaned on Matthew Wood and Jake Furlong in the second period to erase an early 2-goal deficit, but their dreams of three straight gold medals were dashed by a Jakub Stancl tally with just 11 seconds left to play.
The stunning 3-2 loss is just the first time in eight tries that Czechia has beaten Canada, and only the third time in the last 26 years of the tournament that Canada has failed to get past the quarterfinals.
