Team Canada survived an early scare on Sunday afternoon to beat Germany 6-3 and advance to the quarterfinals at the World Junior Hockey Championship.
Canada’s Renfrew-born head coach, Alan Letang, would lose a key piece of his team just seconds into the game after forward Conor Geekie was ejected following a check to Germany’s Samuel Schindler that officials deemed a hit to the head.
However, Macklin Celebrini would score twice, and Jordan Dumais would break a 3-3 tie in the third period to secure Canada’s third win in the group stage. Brayden Yager, Owen Beck, and Easton Cowan also scored.
The win secures Canada second place in Group A on 9 points and a quarterfinals matchup with Czechia at 8:30 a.m. EST on Tuesday, January 2nd.
