Phone scammers are working a new angle, taking advantage of what they see as perceived gaps in the corporate chain of command to pry money out of unsuspecting employees for bogus invoices, or as advance payments for work they claim was pre-authorized by the boss.
OPP say keep common sense in mind and never share information (e.g., an electricity or gas bill, financial info) with a stranger on the phone.
Always confirm with the owner/manager that there is work to be completed, and do not pay for services before they are completed.
As well, always obtain information about the person on the other end of the line.
Police say the scenario making the rounds sees the fraudster claiming to represent a company that has allegedly spoken with the owner/manager about inspecting or renewing the fire extinguishers at the business.
The caller states that the owner/manager has approved the use of business funds to pay for the service.
The caller then directs the employee to send payment in Bitcoin.
If you have been a victim of this fraud please contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
