The school tells myFM that world champion sledge hockey player Lou Mulvihill will be enshrined within the RCI Wall of Achievement.
Mulvihill, who attended RCI in the late 1960s and early 1970s, says a touring demonstration of the sport at Ottawa’s Tom Brown Arena caught his attention in the late 1980s.
Mulvihill enjoyed 15 years at the top of the sport as a player and innovator, and he says that his thinking outside the box raised sledge hockey to new heights—literally.
He also says that there are plans in the works to see his plaque in the near future, and he hopes his message will encourage today’s students to push themselves to be the best versions of themselves.
Mulvihill’s lengthy career in sledge hockey included a 12-year stint with the men’s national team, where he was named their first-ever captain in 1999.
He also collected a number of accolades along the way, including a bronze medal at the 1994 Lillehammer Paralympic Games and World Championship gold in Salt Lake City back in 2000.
Mulvihill has fully embraced his role as a grandfather since retiring in 2003, although he does joke that looking back on his impact on sledge hockey often makes him wonder what he could have accomplished if he had the foresight to pursue a career in engineering upon graduating from RCI.
