A new program is hoping to make Renfrew an attractive destination for an in-demand career.
Town council approved the establishment of a Building Inspector Internship Program at their evening meeting on Tuesday, November 14th.
Manager of Environment Services Amanda Springer says it addresses significant growth in the local construction industry and brings Renfrew in line with changes made to the Ontario Building Code.
The goal of the program is to create a pipeline of talent that can fill the increasing demand for inspection services, which Chief Administrative Officer Rob Tremblay says is being felt both locally and in neighbouring townships.
The program also gives Town Hall the chance to plan ahead for eventual retirements or departures.
Reeve Peter Emon noted that Renfrew already offers building inspection support for McNab-Braeside and Greater Madawaska, the latter of which has been attempting to hire their own in-house solution for over a year.
Emon says that might lead to a need for more inspectors as new positions are created to meet demand.
Tremblay adds that the program gives aspiring building inspectors a chance to train “slowly but surely” under the guidance of the town’s Chief Building Official, Tom Webster.
