The Ministry of Environment says Renfrew’s Bruce Street landfill needs some work in order to stay in compliance and stay open.
Town Council has approved a two-year project that will stabilize the slopes along a long stretch of the landfill’s rear by adding soil buttresses and reworking the trash currently in place.
The Ministry of Environment is requiring the fix after their inspection over the summer found the current slopes on the trash pile were too close to the landfill’s licensed fill limit.
It’s one of three non-compliance issues that the inspection discovered, which a report from the Manager of Environmental Services, Amanda Springer, says “highlights the need for capital investment in the Landfill site to remain compliant.”
The first half of the project will be completed in 2024, and Town Council has approved setting aside $811,536 in the 2024 budget to get the work underway.
Town staff are expecting a surplus in this year’s landfill operating budget of around $350,000, which could be used to cover part of the cost of the first phase of work.
