McNab-Braeside Council discussed resident concerns about motorists speeding within the Township again Tuesday night (November 7th), passing a resolution circulated by Parry Sound (requesting the Province allow automated speeding enforcement on all local roads).
That’s Mayor Mark MacKenzie, who says the problem is multi-faceted.
Presently the “black cats” are allowed only near schools and within designated community safety zones.
One of the issues is OPP Detachment Staffing Issues, which are improving locally.
Other staffing levels in Eastern Ontario are much lower than that of the Renfrew detachment.
The Mayor also believes a rising tide of other circumstances have preoccupied police time.
MacKenzie says OPP believe catching speeders on Highway 17 is performing a service to the Township.
The Mayor says automated speed enforcement might make drivers wary of being ticketed, whereas they currently travel with impunity.
Councillor Scott Brum did not oppose the resolution, but remains unconvinced that the black cats will also contribute to an enhanced police patrol presence.
He and Mayor MacKenzie recently met with Detachment Commander Dawn Ferguson, and a report will be forthcoming to their peers next month on those discussions.
