The Renfrew Wolves and their fans got to experience every emotion from bitter defeat to thrilling victory over the weekend as they split a three-game stretch on their way to the CCHL’s Fall Showcase in Ottawa.
The Wolves would begin the weekend by hosting the Ottawa Jr. Senators at the Ma-te-Way Activity Centre on Friday, October 6th. The game followed a familiar blueprint for the Wolves, as they let a 4-2 lead slip away in the closing minutes of the third to lose 5-4 in overtime.
Dane Carter, Hunter McKnight, Jace Letourneau, and Andrew Morton would score for the Wolves, as goalie Ethan Dinsdale made 35 stops on 40 attempts.
They would follow up with another tough loss on Sunday as they made their way to the Bell Sensplex for their first Showcase game against the Cornwall Colts. The Colts would win 4-1 despite a gutsy 35-save performance from Wolves goaltender Viacheslav Gordeichuk. Jace Letourneau would score his fifth of the season to break up the Colts’ shutout attempt.
Renfrew were able to turn their fortunes around on Thanksgiving Monday, picking up a 4-3 win over their divisional rival Kemptville 73’s thanks in part to a pair of two-goal games from Dane Carter and Joshua Penney. Gordiechuk would make 25 saves on 28 attempts to hold off a late comeback attempt from the 73’s.
The CCHL Fall Showcase continues on Tuesday, October 10th, as the now 2-6-2 Renfrew Wolves get another shot at the Ottawa Jr. Senators. Gametime at the Richcraft Sensplex is at 1:45 p.m.
