If a fire breaks out in your home, will you be Saved by the Beep?
The Renfrew Fire Department is reminding you that this Thursday, September 28th, is national Test Your Fire Alarm Day, and have a few tips to protect you and your family.
Homeowners and landlords are responsible by law for ensuring each storey of a property has a smoke alarm, as well as one outside sleeping areas. Tenants are also responsible for letting their landlord know if there are not enough working fire alarms in their home, and to not tamper with the alarm in any way.
A smoke alarm should be set up on the ceiling or high on the wall of on each storey of your home, as well as outside sleeping areas.
They say to make sure the battery gets replaced each year or if the alarm fails to respond to testing, and to replace the alarm itself if it’s more than 10 years old.
You should also regularly vacuum dust out of your alarms by opening the cover and gently brushing out the insides, and replace any alarms that are more than 10 years old.
The Fire Department add that planning your escape with two ways out of each room ahead of time is just as important as the alarm itself when it goes off.
