This summer’s North American Indigenous games saw more than 5000 participants converge on Halifax.
Among them, local leader, recruiter, and coach for Team Ontario, Gerry Benoit.
Head coach of the U14 boys basketball team who would take home silver at the games, Benoit says one of the highlights was a 20-point comeback win in overtime against Team British Columbia.
A veteran of the games, Benoit feels pride in helping local athletes get the international level as he winds down his own involvement
More than 750 indigenous nations were represented at the games, which feature 16 sports.
Benoit believes it’s experiences like these games that will stick with local athletes as they grow and mature.
