Council in Renfrew has added a policy regarding intimate partner violence to the town’s community safety and well-being plan.
That’s one of the recommendations made during last year’s inquest into the 2015 deaths of Renfrew County residents Carol Culleton, Anastasia Kuzyk, and Nathalie Warmerdam by a man personally known to all three.
Mayor Tom Sidney presided over a unanimous vote to include the new policy.
The motion also includes declaring both intimate partner violence and violence against women an epidemic, which was welcome news for Councilor Andrew Dick.
Town Reeve Peter Emon says many of the 86 recommendations made by the inquest jury are easily doable, but some will require the province to get involved.
The move follows the recent move by the County of Renfrew to declare intimate partner violence and violence against women an epidemic.
Emon, who is also the Warden for the county, adds that he’s proud of our community for stepping forward to recognize the issue and pushing for solutions.
