A pair of large crowds surrounded the Renfrew County Catholic District School Board office in Pembroke yesterday afternoon, one showing support for Josh Alexander. The other, showing love for the LGBTQ2S+ community. Alexander was expelled from St. Joseph’s High School in Renfrew earlier this year after not following conditions when he was suspended for voicing concerns over shared bathrooms. He tells myFM that he’s been working on legal action.
On the other side of Pembroke Street West, pride flags, music and dancing could be seen from a distance. Spokes person for the group, Jill Holroyd of PFlag Renfrew County tells myFM that everyone has a right to be safe.
Submitted to the catholic school board was the petition to reinstate Josh to school. The petition has over 5,000 signatures. He tells myFM news that at this point, he’s not sure when he’ll be able to finish high school.
Spokes person for the group, Jill Holroyd of PFlag Renfrew County tells myFM that it’s a disappointing situation that’s unfolding.
Since begin expelled, 17-year-old Alexander has been making his way across the country gaining support for his moment.
Holroyd mentions that tensions involving the LGBTQ2S+ community has been brought forward a lot lately, but she states that love will always continue to be there.
Police were also on hand during the rallies Thursday afternoon. Mostly for traffic control.
