Ontario’s Education Minister says he’s preparing kids for the jobs of tomorrow. The Province will implement a new high school graduation requirement next fall aimed at preparing students for the jobs of tomorrow. Stephen Lecce said 300,000 jobs in construction, manufacturing, computer technology, hospitality, and communication are waiting for workers.
Starting in 2024, all students will be required to earn a grade 9 or 10 technological education credit as part of their diploma. The Education Minister says the jobs of tomorrow will require science, technology, engineering, math, and skilled trades.
Lecce said more young women need to consider these fields of study.
Lecce says Ontario’s Plan to Catch Up will expose students to STEM fields, including in the skilled trades, as a future career. By 2026, it’s projected that approximately one in five job openings in Ontario will be in skilled trades.
